Cold storage rooms are engineering marvels designed to provide perfect thermal insulation from the outside environment. When we examine the structure of a cold room panel, we find durable steel sheets on both the inside and outside. Between these two sheets lies 42 density (kg/m³) polyurethane (PUR) core, injected at high pressure into cold molds without the use of heating or pressing systems. Its insulation capacity is massive. However, when it comes to ballistic resistance, muzzle velocities and kinetic energy take the stage.
Firearms and Ballistic Effects: What Does Which Bullet Do?
Let's include common firearms in our scenario, heavily used by law enforcement, military, and the general market:

9x19 mm Parabellum (SAR9 Series, Kılınç 2000 Mega): With a muzzle velocity of approximately 350-400 m/s, these handguns are the most common in civilian and law enforcement conflicts. A 9mm bullet will pierce the thin (usually 0.5 mm - 0.7 mm) steel sheet on the panel's surface like paper. While the 42 density polyurethane foam is a fantastic thermal insulator, it has zero mechanical resistance to stop a bullet. The projectile will easily penetrate straight through both sides of 6cm, 8cm, and 10cm panels. On the thickest 20cm panels, the bullet might tumble and lose its energy inside the foam, but it will still likely cause severe damage to both steel faces.

Shotguns (12 Gauge): This depends entirely on the ammunition. If a "slug" is fired, it will blast a massive hole straight through both steel sheets, regardless of the panel thickness (even 20cm). If "buckshot" is used, some of the pellets might get trapped within the thickest polyurethane cores (15-20cm), but the front surface of the panel will be completely destroyed.

5.56 mm Long-Barrel Rifles: With a muzzle velocity of around 900 m/s, this military-grade ammunition is an unstoppable force against standard steel sheets and 20cm of PUR core, even if it's standard FMJ and not armor-piercing. The bullet will slice through the panel like butter with almost no deceleration, remaining lethal to targets hiding behind it.
What Happens to the Storage? (Physical and Operational Damage)
Bullets hitting cold room panels do more than just punch mechanical holes; they completely destroy the operational principles of the facility:

Thermal Bridges and Condensation: The hole created by the bullet allows internal and external air to mix. This "thermal bridge" drops the insulation value of that specific spot to zero.

Icing and Foam Rupture: When the polyurethane foam is exposed to the air via the bullet hole, humid external air enters and freezes inside the core due to the sub-zero temperatures of the room. Since water expands when it freezes, ice will slowly rupture and decay the surrounding polyurethane structure from the inside out.

Gas Leak Hazards: If stray or penetrating bullets hit the evaporators on the ceiling or the copper pipes carrying refrigerant gases (Freon/Ammonia), the entire system will vent. This results in the spoilage of millions of dollars worth of inventory and potential toxic gas leaks.
In Summary: Cold room panels are not bunkers in a gunfight. After a shootout, a punctured panel is no different from a sinking ship taking on water; the damaged sections must be replaced immediately.
